Chapter Nine

I slipped deeply into the warm familiarity that was Kraggon’s mind, drawn to his energy, drawn to his strength and drawn to that hidden part of him that was gentle and vulnerable, the part of himself he would likely deny having. I let myself feel enveloped by his spirit’s energy, reveled in the rightness of it so I would be able to take some of him with me when I left.

Have you been in here all along? His words caressed the walls of my mind gently.

I have. Our energies had intertwined, so it was hard to tell where I stopped and he started. I’d never felt so close to anyone in my life.

I’ve felt you there, your softness, your understanding. His hand slid over the curve of my hip and over my belly. I didn’t fully realize that was you. I wondered at the difference I felt within myself, but didn’t know it was possible to be in someone’s mind. It isn’t common knowledge in Brausa.

I thought not.

It sounds like magic even now, except here we are. You’ve been a steadying force for me. As an afterthought he added, I don’t know how Morten came to have that piece of it.

Then you didn’t know I was leaving messages for you when I was frustrated with you?

Truthfully, I’d begun to suspect, but didn’t want to sound crazy. He smiled and barely shook his head. It explains a few moments I’ve had recently.

I’m sorry you had to find out this way. I hope you understand. I needed to know what was going to be done with me. At first, I listened because I was afraid.

I would never have hurt you on purpose.

Being in your head over the last few days let me know that.

I wondered about the bomb in the marketplace, and he saw my question.

“I was so angry. I’m still so angry.” He paused, but I sensed that there was more to say that he was refusing to acknowledge. That one door, the one that was the ultimate source of his deepest pain, remained shut. I suspected I knew what lay beyond that mental door. He was choosing to ignore it.

“You were going to abort the mission, weren’t you?” The memory of the marketplace fiasco was there in his mind. “You were going to tell your partner that you couldn’t do this thing.” He’d glimpsed the children playing innocently, and it had destroyed his resolve. It reminded him of how innocent his own child had been. He’d become crazed with his confused emotions, and he’d been caught.

“I’d worked so hard for my life. I was trying to leave behind the pain of the past...”

“Your parents?”

His tone showed some surprise. “Did Ede tell you?”

“Only some.”

Kraggon’s thoughts were in turmoil as the image of a man, slightly older and similar to Kraggon, filled his mind. Surrounding the memory were feelings of deep love, respect and sorrow. Into the picture of his father came his mother, a beautiful woman with golden blond hair and a mischievous smile.
